The Wild Rhesus Macaque Monkeys
The wild monkeys at silver Springs were introduced in the park in the mid 1930's. Contrary to folklore that the monkeys were escapies from old tarzan movies, the monkeys released intentionally by a concessionair by the name of Colonol Tooey, Colonal Toey released six monkeys on an Island in the park and was going to call it monkey Island to promote his jungle cruise tour, what he didnt know was that the monkeys were excellent swimmers, and swam away from the Island.. The monkeys adapted very easily the warm climat and feed on berries, plant leaves and the ocasional bug or two. They now thrive in the Silver Springs & Oklawaha river basen and wetland. Kayaking in Silver Springs is one of the very few places in the state that you can see monkeys.
